A home computer is almost essential these days. If you are looking to purchase your first computer, or to purchase an additional one for your home, there are many things that you need to consider before making such a purchase. Following these suggestions will help you in the decision making process, and help to ensure that you consider everything in terms of what your computer needs, and the money you have to create such a computer for you and your family.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine what you need and want the computer for. If you need it for gaming, or graphic design, your computer needs will be slightly different than if you want it for just surfing the Internet. Your primary use of your computer will help dictate the equipment you'll need inside the computer, which will impact the cost, and budget for your computer.

  2. Step 2

Choose between desktop and laptop models. If you plan on needing to take your computer with you, you'll definitely want to consider a laptop model over a desktop. If you make the choice for a laptop, you need to remember that these are a bit more difficult to upgrade in the future.

  3. Step 3

Choose a model with a processor that will be able to handle what you intend to use the computer for. If you intend to use the computer for watching a lot of movies, designing graphics, or playing games, your video card will be important too. Your computer will need a fast processor to handle multi-tasking, and it will need a decent video card to improve the display of graphics and other visual material.

  4. Step 4

Choose components like DVD-RW's, card readers, etc. If you are building your computer from the ground up rather than purchasing one already built, you may have the option to choose your components. Generally in new computers, you'll see the option for a card reader in place of a floppy disc drive, and you may have the option for a second bay disc drive, which you can use for a burner.

  5. Step 5

Choose the monitor (for desktops). The monitor is actually more important than most people give it credit for, and should be considered heavily. Generally all new monitors are flat screen, and you may still be able to find one that is not widescreen. Consider how often you'll be using the computer, and how much desk space to have to accommodate the monitor.

  6. Step 6

Choose your operating system and preloaded software. Many computer vendors will allow you to choose what comes preloaded on your system if you are customizing it. Otherwise, you'll likely find that you'll have the option to load your system with Windows Vista, or downgrade to Windows XP. Mac systems will come with the most recent OS for that platform.

  7. Step 7

Choose your accessories. These are things like your printer, scanner, external hard drives, speakers, and other peripherals. You can get some of things with your computer, or build them up slowly over time. You'll definitely want to get a set of speakers right away if you plan on using the computer for any music or gaming.

Tips & Warnings
  • Computers are upgradeable, so if your budget doesn't allow for much now, remember that you'll be able to add and change components later.
