If you're as busy as most people today, anything you can automate to work for you while you do something else is not only a time-saver but a life-saver. Defragmenting your hard drive is one of those tasks you know you need to do, but hardly have time for. Why not schedule it?

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows OS
  1. Step 1

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Scheduled Tasks. This is where you can schedule tasks for your computer to run at a pre-designated time.

  2. Step 2

Click the "Add Scheduled Task" button. Follow the Wizard to add your task. Click "Next" to begin.

  3. Step 3

Look for "Disc Defragmenter" in your list. If you do not see it, click "Browse." Browse to: C: > Windows > System32 > drfg

  4. Step 4

Name the task and choose how often you want to run it. Choose the start time.

  5. Step 5

Enter the username and password for the Windows user you want to run the task. Without this, the task may not execute properly.

  6. Step 6

Repeat for each drive you want to run a defrag on.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to keep the username and password for the Windows account. The computer will run this task as if the user did it.
