Presently many people wear bandannas for aesthetic purposes, but this is not the only reason to wear a bandanna. Farmers, cowboys, dancers, and soldiers often wear bandannas as a means to keep sweat, hair, or blood from getting into their eyes. Even wild land firefighters sometimes wear bandannas to decrease the amount of smoke and fumes they inhale. With all of these uses, it could be very important one day to know how to properly tie a bandanna.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 Bandana
  1. Step 1

Place the bandanna directly in front of you on a hard surface. The bandanna should be turned at a 45 degree angle so it looks like a diamond.

  2. Step 2

Fold the bottom corner of the bandanna upwards. Do not fold the bandanna directly in half. The corner you fold upwards should come to the center of the bandanna. It isn't necessary for the fold to come to the center of the bandanna, it is usually just a good point to start from. If you need the bandanna to be larger when finished, then make the fold smaller. If the bandanna needs to be smaller, make the fold larger.

  3. Step 3

Place the folded part of the bandanna against your forehead at whichever height you want the finished bandanna to be at. Directly above the eyebrows usually works best. Use both of your hands to hold either side of the folded edge of the bandanna.

  4. Step 4

Bring both ends of the bandanna directly behind your head. Tie a single knot behind your head. Do not make the knot too tight, just tight enough so that the bandanna will stay in place but remain comfortable.

  5. Step 5

Hold the first knot in place so it doesn't loosen. While doing this, use your other hand to bring the bottom corner up, over, and behind your head. Place this corner directly over the first knot that was tied.

  6. Step 6

Tie another knot using the two sides of the bandana that you used to tie your first knot. This will effectively put the bottom corner of the bandanna inside of the square knot and therefore hold it in place better.

  7. Step 7

OPTIONAL: Take off the bandana (while still tied) and invert the bandana. This makes it possible to place the knot and ends of the bandana inside of the bandana. This step will hide the square knot and ends of bandana. Do not do this step if you wish for the square knot and ends of bandana to be visible.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take off the bandanna (while still tied) and invert the bandanna. This makes it possible to place the knot and ends of the bandanna inside of the bandanna. This step will hide the square knot and ends of bandanna.
  • Make sure you are not wearing the wrong color bandana in a bad neighborhood. It may be best to stick with neutral colors while in dangerous neighborhoods.
