Instructions

  1. Surface Preparation

    • 1

Pour a small amount of water onto the floor to find out if your concrete floor has been sealed. If the water isn’t absorbed, you must remove the sealer along with any other grease or oil spots. You can grind or sand the stains and sealer out or you can use a chemical stripper. Don’t worry about uneven colors; they will become a part of the finish after staining.

    • 2

Use an acrylic patch to repair any holes. This will minimize shrinkage and take the stain well. Don't worry about imperfections or swirls in the concrete. These will add to the unique finish.

    • 3

Sand the floor for better absorption. The concrete will take the stain better and maximize the color and pattern. for small area, use a hand sander, but for room-size areas, rent a floor sander.

    Staining

    • 4

Mask off any areas you don’t want stained. It is impossible to remove from some surfaces and may cause permanent damage.

    • 5

Stain can be applied with any roller or brush with non-metal parts, but a sprayer specifically made for acid staining is the easiest and fastest applicator. Spray in a circular motion, and as an option, another person can follow you with a wire brush to intensify the effects.

    • 6

Control the effect and absorption of the stain with water. You can either wet the surface before you apply the stain or spray it later. Experiment in an inconspicuous spot to get the effect that you like.

    • 7

Add dyes and tints to give the impression of depth and texture. For a dramatic look, cut patterns with a diamond-blade saw and stain each section with a different tint.

    • 8

Seal the stained floor for a more durable finish. For indoor floors, use a water-based lacquer and a solvent based for outdoor floors. Upkeep is easy. Mopping with a mild detergent and an occasional waxing is usually all that is needed.
