How to Get Started Acting
If you'd like to pursue an acting career, it can be difficult to know where to begin. There are many tools you will need to actively pursue an acting jobs, for instance training, headshots and management. Here are some tips for getting on the path to your acting career.

Get training. If you want to be an actor, you need acting training. Pursue training in the particular field of acting in which you are interested. For example, if you are interested in screen acting, take an on-camera acting class. If you love comedy, opt for an improvisation class. Or if you need to immerse yourself in the core of the craft, try a scene study class. Even if you have some acting training, it's important to keep it ongoing. Just like any career, you will always have room to grow as an actor. Acting classes can help to keep your acting chops in tip-top shape.

Schedule a headshot photo session. Whether you want to be a commercial, film, television or theater actor, you absolutely need a professional headshot. This 8 by 10 inch photo will be your calling card and the thing you submit to agents, casting directors and producers. Your headshot should be an accurate representation of you so don't try to look more glamorous than you normally do in person.

Create an acting resume. Attach your resume to the back of every headshot. Include your name and contact information as well as physical characteristics such as height, weight, hair color and eye color. List acting credits from film, television and theater. Following your credits with a list of all your acting training, and special skills. Make sure to list unions affiliations at the top of the resume, such as SAG, AFTRA or AEA.

Purchase a copy of an agent listing book. If you live in a large market such as Los Angeles or New York, purchase an agency book that is published for agents in that area. These booklets also list what particular agencies are looking for in terms of talent. You can then submit your headshot and resume to the agents who are looking for your type. If you live in a smaller market, simply search for agents in that area.

Submit your headshot and resume to agencies for representation consideration. In order to get high-level auditions, you'll need to get an agent in a large market. Write a brief cover letter, telling prospective agents why you think you would be a good addition to their rosters. Put this letter as well as your headshot and resume in a large envelope and mail it to each agent. You can do a mass mailing to all agents who you feel would be a good fit for you.

Read acting forums online. There are many online acting forums such as BackStage and Showfax which feature a bevy of information for the new actor. You can post questions in the forums and glean information from seasoned actors. Try to read as much information as you can when you are starting out. You'll find it will well-equip you for this exciting field.

Be persistent. Starting an acting career can take a long time. Keep your chin up and stay at it!
Be aware that you will get rejected a lot as you audition for roles. You will always audition far more than you work as an actor.
