Learn to Tie a Simple Overhand Knot

An overhand knot is one of the most basic knots to learn how to tie, as well as the basis for a number of other, more complicated knots. Once you've mastered the overhand knot, you can go on to tie many more difficult knots, like the double overhand knot, the multifold overhand knot, the Flemish eight, as well as a lot more. All you'll need is a sturdy piece of cord, string, rope or twine and a few seconds. With these tools and this simple instruction, you'll be tying overhand knots with the best of them.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a piece of string, cord, rope or twine
  1. Step 1

Take a rope, string, twine or cord with two ends. Lay it in front of you, horizontally.

  2. Step 2

Take the right end of the rope and cross it over the left end of the rope, making the outline of what looks like a fish. There should be a large loop on the right side with two crossed "fins" sticking out the back.

  3. Step 3

Take the top end of the rope, or what was originally the left end, and place it in the center of the loop, leaving the rest of the rope in place.

  4. Step 4

Holding both ends of the rope, drag the left end (or the end that is in the center of the loop) under the loop and onto the right side.

  5. Step 5

Pull on both ends to tighten.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you tie your knot too tightly, you may have trouble untying it later.
