Many anglers love fly fishing. It gets them back to the classics of fishing. Following the metronome-like swish of the rod as it goes back and forth right before landing a fly on the top of water is great, but a pain when you fishing from a shore filled with prickle bushes and overhead trees. Don't think about fly fishing from a boat unless you have a thing for getting wet. What you need then is a good-old spinning reel.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rod
  • Spinning reel
  • Bait
  1. Step 1

Take the rod in your casting hand and wrap your fingers around the reel. Two fingers should be above and two fingers should be below the reel. Place your thumb on top of the pole.

  2. Step 2

Flip the bail on the reel to the over position.

  3. Step 3

Using your forefinger (pointer), pull the fishing line slightly and hold.

  4. Step 4

Bring your arm back in a casting motion, elbow locked, then come forward. This can be done overhead or with a side motion

  5. Step 5

Let your finger release the line as the rod's tip faces forward.

  6. Step 6

As the bait hits the water, flip the bail back by slightly rotating the reel's handle. Slowly reel in the line and cast again.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always watch your bait. A too powerful cast will send your bait flying.
  • Your bait should be about eight inches from the tip of your rod when casting.
  • Make sure you have your line position set correctly. Having the line go both ways could lead to an entanglement.
