How to Use a PDF File

There are more than 250 million Portable Document Formats (PDF) on the web, and there are more than 1 billion PDF documents world wide. PDF documents can be viewed on any computer system. This multiplatform document solution has been perfected over a period of 15 years. Use PDF files to read e-books, study for school, send marketing brochures, and much more. This article will instruct the reader in how to utilize a PDF file for general exploration.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • PDF converter
  • Adobe Reader

    Learn the basic features of a PDF file

  1. Step 1

    Open a PDF file in Adobe Acrobat Reader. In order to use the PDF file you will need Acrobat Reader to open it. Acrobat is free and can be downloaded from the web. See the resources section of this article for the link to Adobe’s free Reader software.

  2. Step 2

    Click on the Glove/Hand icon to pan around the document. This tool is located on the left side of Adobe Reader.

  3. Step 3

    Click on the "Text" selection tool, also located on the left hand side of Adobe Reader. Hold down the left mouse button while you draw the mouse to highlight text in the PDF file. Hit "Ctrl" + "C" to copy the text. Paste the text into another document by pressing "Ctrl" + "V" while pointing inside another open application such as Word or Notepad.

    Download "Cute Writer" for free. See the resources section of this article for the link.

  6. Step 2

    Open a word processor application, like MS Word, Word Perfect, Word Pad, or Note Pad. Open a file you want to view in the word processor.

  7. Step 3

    Make any last changes to the document.

  8. Step 4

    Save the document.

  9. Step 5

    Click on the "File menu" in your word processor, and point to Print. Click on the Printer source drop-down list. Click on "Cute Writer". Click "Print".

  10. Step 6

    Give the file a name. Click "Save".

Tips & Warnings
  • Search relative keywords to the subject you are trying to reference in a long PDF document, or an array of PDF documents. Often is the case that a PDF file will have a title that is different from the subject you are trying to search. If the subject is buried in the body text of the PDF you will not find it during a search. This is because the body text is actually an image, and thus the search function in a PDF document can only search for text.
