Venting the roof and attic space helps keep utility costs to a minimal. Proper installation of these vents is crucial to experiencing the maximum benefit. Most soffits are made from plywood, so preparation is a snap. However, accuracy is necessary, as these vents are simple grates installed to the underside of the soffit. You will need a stepladder and heavy-duty extension cord. Also, to save time and effort, make a template of the pattern needed to cut the holes.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the vent cover plate and draw a pattern on a piece of cardboard that will be one inch smaller in both directions. Locate the area for the first installation and draw the hole with the template.

    • 2

Drill a hole large enough to slip the jigsaw in place. Cut the hole with the jigsaw. Be certain to cut as close to the line as possible.

    • 3

Secure the vent cover plate with screws and a screw gun. Repeat Step 2 and Step 3 until all the vents are installed. Paint them if desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always wear safety glasses. Use caution when securing the vent cover plates as overtightening can compromise the strength of the hold.

  • Do not use an extension cord that is not heavy enough to carry the correct amps to your electrical tool. This can cause the tool to burn out.
