A B-2 visa must be granted to anyone from a foreign country entering the United States for a short-term visit. Perhaps you would like to visit friends or family, get medical treatment or attend meetings or training required by your company. These are all reasons to request a B-2 visa. If you are traveling to the U.S. for other business-related activity, you would request a B-1 visa. To receive a B-2 visa, you must provide evidence that you have honorable intentions regarding entering the U.S. and while visiting. U.S. authorities will want to know that you have a strong residency in your own country and that you will return when your visa time is up.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get a letter from your sponsor. This can be a relative, friend or colleague who is willing to vouch for your good character. The letter will need to include some documentation proving this person is a stable individual. This documentation can be bank statements, employment records or income tax returns.

  2. Step 2

Write a B-2 visa request letter, relating who your sponsor is, your reasons for the visit and how long you want to stay.

  3. Step 3

Bring your passport as well as two 2 1/2-inch photos of yourself. You also should bring an employment letter with a leave approval if you are working. This is a strong supporting document that will add to your ability to be accepted for a B-2 visa.

  4. Step 4

Bring property documents, which you should request from your auditor. Also bring the visa fees (amounts vary according to respective consulates).

  5. Step 5

Complete a special form, DS-157, if you are a male between 16 and 45. This form is required for added security purposes.

  6. Step 6

Carry health insurance while visiting the United States. Medical treatment is very expensive. If there is an emergency, you will want to be covered.

Tips & Warnings
  • For most B-2 visas granted, the stay decided upon is generally 30 days to 6 months. However, it is at the discretion of the INS agent at the entry point.
