How to Explore Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

Capitol Hill is more than just the seat of American power. It’s also a fabulous neighborhood, bursting with restaurants and shopping, historic landmarks, and bohemian flair. On your next trip to Washington, D.C., be sure to set aside a day to explore this up-and-coming community.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the Capitol building. You may be able to arrange a tour through your congressperson or senator, but even if you can’t get in, there is still plenty to see outside. Stand on the steps and enjoy the vista of the National Mall. Fill your camera with photos of the building’s graceful dome. In winter, admire the twinkling lights and handmade ornaments of the Capitol Christmas Tree on the Capitol’s lawn.

Explore Union Station. This historic train station is a major crossroads in D.C.--the Metro’s red line runs through it, as well as all commuter and Amtrak trains. Amidst the bustle, a large number of shops and restaurants tempt travelers, and the building itself, with an ornate vaulted ceiling, is photo-worthy.

    • 3

Stroll through narrow streets lined with historic townhouses. In the summer, many of the houses have small, flower-filled gardens in front.

    • 4

Pick out produce at Eastern Market. This farmers’ market has been serving D.C. residents for more than 100 years. The fruits and vegetables are fresh, and the flowers are inexpensive. Street musicians add a bohemian element to this multi-ethnic market.

    • 5

Learn about plants at the United States Botanic Garden. Inside the greenhouse you’ll find a tropical rainforest, a desert climate, and an exotic orchid room. Outside is the National Garden, which contains an outstanding rose garden. Across the street is Bartholdi Park, with its historic fountain and plenty of benches for reading or picnicking.
