How to Create a Punk Look

Save

Punk rock gave rise to a new alternative look, beginning in the 1970's. The common theme of the punk look is rebellion. Punk rock and the accompanying style rebelled against the status quo. Torn clothing, wild hair, heavy boots sent the message that punk rockers refused to conform to fashion. The great part of creating a punk look is punk allows a lot of creativity. While there are certain items of clothing and accessories, such as ripped shirts and heavy boots, that are common to punk, the only hard rule is that the look should make a rebellious statement against the status quo.

How to Create a Punk Look

Take a regular pair of skinny jeans, or even leather pants, and slice some holes in them. Add metal studs and chains if desired--chains and studs can go anywhere on the fabric. The chains or studs can be sewn to the pants or attached by safety pins. Using fabric paint, you can paint graphics, such as anarchy symbols, on the jeans as well. One common way to make pants punk, is to cut some holes in the pants and then pin the holes shut with several safety pins. Do this in several places on the fabric and you've created a good punk pair of jeans.

Cut slashes or holes in a t-shirt in a chaotic pattern. It is perfect if the t-shirt looks like it has been shredded by a monster; in fact, for a more severe effect, you can use red fabric paint around the slashes to suggest blood

Put on your heavy black boots and a leather jacket, or a custom-designed denim jacket, to complete the outfit. Chains and metals studs on the jacket are a good touch.

Dye your hair in bright, head-turning colors. Colors for the punk look are usually colors not common to normal hair. In other words, bright orange, fuchsia, blood red, or purple are good colors for creating a punk look.

Style your hair in an extreme style. Heavy duty gels or hair wax are a must for good punker hair. The classic Mohawk works well, but you don't have to have a Mohawk to be punk. Take any hair style, put a lot of hair styling product in and make your brightly colored punk hair stand up--and you will stand out in the crowd.

Get a permanent or temporary tattoo. Anarchy symbols work great for the punk look but are overdone. You should get a tattoo that expresses who you are and what you are about. Tattoos are so common outside the punk scene now that it would be more rebellious not to have a tattoo, really. But most in the punk scene do have tattoos and body piercings.

Apply dark eyeliner and some dark eye shadow--punk guys commonly wear at least eyeliner. This step is optional if you aren't comfortable wearing cosmetics
