How to Use a a Right Angle Drill

Every trade has its own special tools for the job and woodworking is no different. The right angle drill has increased the complexity of woodwork because it allows the user to drill holes in places that are impossible to reach otherwise. One such instance is the installation of drawer hardware. To drill pilot holes on the inside edge of the face frame of a cabinet was next to impossible before this invention came along. Now, with the right angle drill, drilling these pilot holes is a snap. Not only has it revolutionized cabinet making, it has also made drilling holes in wall studs in preparation of plumbing and electrical installation a lot easier than it was in the past.

Things You'll Need

• Right angle drill
• Drill bits
• Pencil
• Nail set
• Hammer

Instructions

1. Mark the material being drilled with a pencil to ensure the hole will be exactly where it is desired. Place the nail set on that mark and lightly tap it with the hammer.

2. Insert the required drill bit in the drill using the chuck key to tighten it. Be certain to insert enough of the bit into the chuck so the right angle drill will fit in the area it is needed.

3. Grip the handle tight enough to prevent the right angle drill from slipping out of your hand. Bump the right angle drill’s operating button to ensure the bit is set in the pilot hole. Once this is secured, drill the hole as you would any other hole.

Tips & Warnings

• The feel of a right angle drill is different from a regular drill and may cause the user to let the right angle drill slip from their grip.

• Reversing the drive of a right angle drill will make it easier to remove the drill bit from its hole.

• Never use a right angle drill in a position that cramps your hand, or prohibits a tight grip of the drill.
