This origami paper decoration is a great craft for kids during Easter and can be made into ornaments that can be hung in windows, on door handles or added to a magnet for the refrigerator. The chick in an egg can also be made into a free-standing paper design by gently squashing the bottom onto a flat surface. You can decorate the desk at your office or add this paper creation to the top of your computer monitor to bring a little smile to your face while working 9 to 5. Instructions

    • 1

Cut your paper into a square. Printer and notebook paper will need to be cut down into a same-sided square. You can do this by folding diagonally into a triangle and cutting off the excess paper. Origami paper will already be pre-cut.

    • 2

Turn your square with the point facing straight up and down and to the left and right, like a diamond. With the square turned like a diamond, fold the bottom point one-fourth of the way up toward the top point.

    • 3

Fold the left corner into the center so that the bottom square side lines up parallel to the center crease. Repeat on the other side, folding the left point in so that the bottom square side lines up parallel to the center crease. Turn the paper over.

    • 4

Fold the left point down and line up the outside edge with the center crease. Do this to the remaining point on the left side as well, so that the two remaining square sides meet at the parallel crease in the center of the paper. Turn the paper over.

    • 5

Make the chick’s beak. Fold the top point down and at a slight angle to the left and then fold the down point back up and slightly to the left.

    • 6

Make the cracked egg shell. Taking the two loose flaps on the base, fold them in and under to create two parallel triangle points. This will make the base look like it has three cracked-shell teeth. On in the very center, and two half cracks on either side.

    • 7

Gently pull out on the three points of the egg shell to create a 3-D look. This will make the chick’s head look like it’s sitting inside the shell. You may need to adjust the head and beak here as well, by rounding it out and over the shell.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a more unique design, use pages from a magazine or coloring book for your base paper or use markers to color the chick when using a white sheet of paper.

  • You can make the chick in an egg stand by gently squashing the bottom into a solid surface.
