Tie a Square Knot for Beading

Tying a square knot is a rather simple process. Square knots are used for many different uses. In jewelry making, it is typically used to tie two cords together. The knot is secure, but it is also easy to undo if necessary. In jewelry making, the square knot works well with lacing, leather, silk cording and stretch cords.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Some form of cording or lacing to be tied
  1. Step 1

Begin with an end of the cord in each hand.

  2. Step 2

Take the cord in your left hand, and lay it over the cord in your right hand.

  3. Step 3

Loop the cord from the left under, around and back over the cord. The cord that started on your right side is now on the left side.

  4. Step 4

Repeat the process above, this time taking the cord in your right hand first and placing it over the cord in your left hand. Then loop it under, around and back over the cord. The cord that started on your left side is now on the right side.

  5. Step 5

Pull firmly on all four strands that are coming out of the knot to tighten the knot.

  6. Step 6

Finish the ends of the cords by cutting off any excess cord.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can reinforce the knot by placing a bit of glue over the knot.
  • Depending upon your project, you can hide the knot under a bead and actually glue the bead over the knot.
  • The easiest way to remember the square knot is to repeat: right over left, left over right
