There are various forms of vaginal contraception to help prevent pregnancy. One option is contraceptive gel or foam. Most are unscented, clear, non-staining, unflavored and non-hormonal. Here's what you need to do every time before sexual intercourse.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Vaginal contraceptive kit (foam or gel)
  1. Step 1

Wash hands. Always clean your hands with soap and water before touching the applicator.

  2. Step 2

Open the box. Read the directions carefully. Shake the can of foam well and remove the lid.

  3. Step 3

Take one applicator and place the end with the hole on top of the can, pushing down. Hold it on firmly until the applicator is completely filled. You will know this because the plunger end will rise.

  4. Step 4

Lying down on your back, reach down and slowly insert the applicator into the vagina. Still gripping the end, put it in as far as it will go. Then push the plunger end toward your vagina. This will release the foam or gel into the vagina, near your cervix.

  5. Step 5

Once applicator is empty, slowly pull applicator out of the vagina. Depending on how many applicators are in the kit, you may want to clean the applicator for further use.

  6. Step 6

Pre-filled gel applicators have sealed caps on the end you insert. Remove the cap and insert the plunger halfway into the other end of the applicator (this is a plastic stick to push the gel out). Insert into the vagina as directed in Step 4. Throw away applicator when done.

Tips & Warnings
  • This form of contraception is for birth control only and is to be applied before sexual intercourse.
  • Contraceptive gel or foam will not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases. For further protection, use a condom.
  • Once applied, foam or gel will only last for approximately 1 hour.
  • Douching shortly after use is not recommended. If you notice irritation in the vaginal area, discontinue use and see a doctor for more options.
  • Keep away from children.
