How to Ride the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad
The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad travels along the Animas River between the towns of Durango and Silverton, Colorado. Located in the extremely rural southwestern part of the state and over 300 miles from Denver, the train takes passengers in open cars through the wilderness of the San Juan Forest, along narrow passages between cliff above and river below, and into the quaint western town of Silverton. The railway allows travelers to shop and dine in Silverton before returning to Durango. One option is to stay a night or two in Silverton at an old hotel, remodeled now as a bed and breakfast.

1
Make reservations early. The Narrow Gauge operates during the summer and autumn and since the interest in this unique ride is high, reservations should be made soon. Prices vary depending on the passenger’s interest. There are several options; two include taking a bus to Silverton and then the train back, and vice versa.
-
2
Make hotel accommodations early as well, especially in the town of Silverton. Because of its perimeter to Mesa Verde National Park, Durango offers more lodging options.

Continue south on Turkey Creek Road on U.S. Highway 285 south to Monte Vista, Colorado, over 200 miles away. Turn right onto U.S. Highway 160 and into Durango. In Durango, turn right onto U.S. Highway 550 north, which becomes Main Street. The depot is at 417 Main.
