How to Ride the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad travels along the Animas River between the towns of Durango and Silverton, Colorado. Located in the extremely rural southwestern part of the state and over 300 miles from Denver, the train takes passengers in open cars through the wilderness of the San Juan Forest, along narrow passages between cliff above and river below, and into the quaint western town of Silverton. The railway allows travelers to shop and dine in Silverton before returning to Durango. One option is to stay a night or two in Silverton at an old hotel, remodeled now as a bed and breakfast.

Instructions

    • 1

Make reservations early. The Narrow Gauge operates during the summer and autumn and since the interest in this unique ride is high, reservations should be made soon. Prices vary depending on the passenger’s interest. There are several options; two include taking a bus to Silverton and then the train back, and vice versa.

    • 2

Make hotel accommodations early as well, especially in the town of Silverton. Because of its perimeter to Mesa Verde National Park, Durango offers more lodging options.

    • 3

Fly into Denver International Airport and access Interstate 70 west out of the city. Take Exit 260, traveling south on State Highway 470 to Turkey Creek Road. Continue south on Turkey Creek Road on U.S. Highway 285 south to Monte Vista, Colorado, over 200 miles away. Turn right onto U.S. Highway 160 and into Durango. In Durango, turn right onto U.S. Highway 550 north, which becomes Main Street. The depot is at 417 Main.

    • 4

Confirm reservations and board the train. Enjoy the ride, though harrowing at times, yet, for the most part, thoroughly relaxing.

    • 5

Photograph the spectacular San Juan Mountains.

    • 6

Get off the train at Silverton and indulge in this authentic Western town, more authentic then Aspen or Jackson Hole. Shop at any of the several stores geared specifically to the Durango and Silverton passengers. Visit stores specializing in original Western wear.

    • 7

Purchase the customary T-shirts and souvenirs at many outlets along Greene Street. Stop at the Visitor Center, also on Greene, and learn all about this historically rich town.

    • 8

Take the Silverton Mountain Summer Scenic Tram, if staying overnight. Also make time for a San Juan Scenic Jeep Tour if your schedule allows.

    • 9

Enjoy the evening festivities of Silverton. There are great choices for dining and entertainment, such as the Brown Bear Cafe, the Shady Lady Restaurant and Rocky Mountain Funnel Cakes & Cafe. Head to the Handlebars Restaurant and Saloon for exciting nightlife.

    • 10

Plan to be at the depot well before departure. Daily round trips usually stop for 2 or 3 hours in Silverton. See scenic views when returning to Durango that were unseen on the journey to Silverton.

Tips & Warnings

  • Those afraid of curving mountain roads at high altitudes may need to rethink the trip. At times, there are some impressive altitude drops directly outside the coach window.
