Work the Tarot Card System in Ogre Battle

The Tarot card system in Ogre Battle can be hard to master, as the game does not tell you which cards have what effect in combat. But learning how to use the cards effectively is one of the keys to making difficult battles possible to win.

Instructions

    • 1
      The Magician card

Use combat-oriented cards to soften up enemy units so that your armies can dispatch them more easily. The "Chariot," "Devil," "Hermit," "Justice," "Tower" and "Magician" Tarot cards all deal direct damage to enemy units in battle.

    • 2
      The Fool card

Reverse the lineup of enemy units, or cause some units to flee to better reach spell casters or the leader of the unit for direct physical attacks. The "Fool" card will cause all enemies except the unit leader to flee for the duration of the battle, while the "Moon" card will swap the enemies' front and back row.

    • 3
      The Hierophant card

Give enemy units negative status effects to make it easier for your armies to defeat them. The "Lovers" card will charm enemies and make them attack each other; the "Hanged Man" card will make enemy units sustain more damage from your attacks; the "Hierophant" card will make all of the enemies fall asleep and stop taking part in battle; and the "Fortune" card will make the enemies run from battle altogether.

    • 4
      The Priestess card

Heal your units with positive status-influencing cards to keep them in battle longer. The "Empress" and "Priestess" cards will restore your units' lost hit points; the "Star" card will make your units evade enemy attacks more efficiently; the "Strength" card will make your units sustain less damage; the "Temperance" card will remove all negative status effects, such as charm or sleep; and the "World" card will make your units immune to magic attacks.

    • 5
      The Judgment card

Destroy evil undead units by using white-magic Tarot cards. The "Sun" and "Judgment" cards will kill undead units immediately and seriously damage low-alignment units.

    • 6
      The Death card

Kill injured enemy units outright with the "Death" card. The less hit points the enemy has, the higher the chance the card will immediately kill the unit.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use the "Joker" item to purchase Tarot cards. While the card you get is random, if you have enough Jokers you can easily get the Tarot card you need for any given situation.

  • Defeating an enemy unit with a Tarot card will give the experience for killing that enemy to your opinion leader, and not to the unit who used the Tarot card.

  • If you pull the "World" Tarot card, all other cards drawn for the remainder of that level will affect all of your units, instead of merely the unit that pulled the card. Due to the possibility of pulling cards that will lower the strength or alignment statistics, it is a good idea to then stop drawing cards and just use the "Joker" item to get them.

  • The "Tower" card causes an earthquake to deal damage, so it will not hurt flying units such as griffins.

  • The "Sun" card will damage your units as well as the enemies, so only have a high-alignment unit use the card, as it deals less damage to high-alignment characters.
