How to Build a Rope Climber

Rope climbing is a great way to exercise the whole body through a fun and exciting method. Rope climbing has been around for a long time, and most school gyms have one in them. If you want to get the rope climbing exercise at home, then you must build your own personal rope to climb. These instructions are for a straight rope that’s knotted for easier climbing, and attaches to the ceiling. You can get a great workout through rope climbing. Just remember to take proper safety precautions.

Things You'll Need

  • Long, sturdy climbing rope made of polypro, manilla, or polyplus (the length will depend on how far you want your rope to reach, most come in 18 foot lengths). These generally come with attachments for hanging from the ceiling already attached.
  • Hardware to hang the rope from the ceiling
  • Sturdy gloves
  • Screwdriver
  • Knotting skills
  • Room to place the rope in
  • Safety helmet
  • Additional safety equipment (such as additional ropes in case the main rope fails)
  • Electric saw
  • Electrical tape
  • Blow torch

Instructions

There are three basic types of rope that are used for climbing. These ropes are made of: polypro, manila, or polyplus materials. Which one you choose depends on the intention that you have for the climbing rope. The end of the rope is important as well. Many people like the poly boot ending.

Place knots in the rope about every 18 inches. Leave rope at the top and bottom that is knot free. For an 18-foot rope this will end up being ten knots. You can use a basic knot where you make a loop with the rope and pass the free end through and then tighten, or you can use a fancier knot such as the figure eight. The video link at the bottom of the page will show you how to make some of these knots.

Decide where you want to hang your rope and attach the hardware that anchors it into the ceiling. Attach the hardware according to the directions that come with it. Try to make it as immobile as possible for maximum safety.

    • 4

Attach the hook that came with the rope to the newly installed hardware in the ceiling. Let the rope fall to the floor. If the rope doesn’t drag on the ground, then you are finished. However, if it is too long, then you will need to go on to step five.

If the rope is too long for your room, then you will need to cut it. The best thing to use for this is probably a small, electric saw. Cut the rope to your desired length, and then tape up the loose end with electrical tape. Some ropes can also be melted together with a blow torch.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consulting a rope expert for the best way to install the rope is a good idea for this project. He or she will be able to tell you the best materials to buy, as well as exactly what equipment is needed for maximum safety.

  • Be sure to choose a ceiling that is sturdy to attach the rope. Wooden beams are a great place to attach the rope. Otherwise the whole thing could come falling down and injure someone.
