How to Make Cell Phone Jewelry

If you’re a person who pays attention to details and loves to dress up, you’re just going to love to make cell phone jewelry. Yes, your cell phone, too, can reflect your personality with adornments of its own. You can coat the phone with a zillion shiny baubles or add a simple silver skull for a starker look. It’s all up to you. You can make cell phone jewelry with a little imagination and a few simple steps.

Instructions

1. Figure out how you want your cell phone decorated. You can keep it simple with a single, small bauble or charm attached to your antenna, coat the whole phone with bling or do something in between.

2. Rummage for adornments. Go through your jewelry box, your mother’s jewelry box (with permission) and ask your friends to donate any broken or used jewelry they no longer want. You will be sure to find a collection of busted earring pieces, pendants that fell off their backings and all kinds of other shiny stuff that will serve your cell phone well.

3. Hit the local craft or jewelry supply store for more jewelry options. Browse the local craft or jewelry supply store to bulk up your collection or get a different style of jewelry. Pick one item or several, depending on how much jewelry you want on your phone.

4. Attach the adornments to your phone. Single charms can be looped with wire, twisted to keep the charm in place, and then wired around your antenna or other part of the phone that allows something to be wrapped and secured around it. Small beads and gems can be glued around the face of the phone or stuck in place at the top or the bottom, as long as you are not obscuring any buttons or the mouthpiece. Use toothpicks to apply the glue to the backs of very small items. Allow ample time to dry before using the phone. You can also string beads together and attach them to the phone's strap with wire, or thread them directly through the strap if you find beads with wide enough openings.

5. Jazz up any cell phone accessories to match. If you have a leather or fabric cell phone case, you can thread thin gold or silver chains through the openings in the case behind the phone, just make sure to wire everything into place. You can also sew charms or baubles all over the outside of the case or glue some leather or chain fringe around the case’s perimeter. Clips can be adorned with glued-on baubles or a single rhinestone mounted at the top.

Tips & Warnings

• If you really want to go all out, glue some gems and charms to the cell phone’s charger while you’re at it.

• A heavy duty craft glue or jewelry glue should do the trick. Glue is available at craft and jewelry supply stores.

• Remember your phone gets banged around and a lot of use. Don’t pick jewelry that is fragile and will break or fall off. You can be sturdy while still being glamorous.

• Do not adorn a rental phone or one you have to give back, unless you stick to the non-permanent jewelry. It’s doubtful you’ll get full credit for a phone you’ve decked out in permanent baubles.
