How to File for Unemployment in Virginia
If you live in the state of Virginia and you have recently lost your job, you may be able to file for unemployment benefits. If you were fired for misconduct at work or quit for a work or medical reason, however, you might not be eligible.

- Social Security number
- Address and telephone number
- Most recent employer’s name, address and telephone number
- Reason you are no longer employed

Go online to the Virginia Employment Commission and click on “Unemployment Insurance” next to the icon that says "Job Seeker."

Click on “File Your Claim Online.”

Read the next page, which tells you it is necessary to have a user ID and password to file a claim online. If you do not have one, you will register on the next page by clicking on “Continue” at the bottom of this page.

Put in your ID and password, or create a new one.

Answer the questions necessary to file the unemployment claim.

Wait at least two weeks before contacting anyone if you do not receive your unemployment check; sometimes it takes that long for processing. You can call the Customer Contact Center at 866-832-2363 with any questions regarding your claim.

The first week that you are eligible for benefits is an unpaid waiting week.
