How to File for Unemployment in Utah
You live in the state of Utah and you have recently lost your job. Everyone keeps telling you that if you are laid off, or in some cases fired, you have the right to file an unemployment claim. Keep in mind, however, that if you were fired for misconduct at work or quit for a work or medical reason, you might not be eligible.
Things You'll Need
- Social Security number
- Names of all employers as they appear on your pay stubs since April 1, 2007
- Name and local number of your union hall, if you obtain work through a union
- Utah driver's license or Utah identification card
- Alien registration number if you are not a U.S. citizen
- Accurate mailing address and phone for any non-Utah employers

Know that the money for unemployment insurance benefits comes from the taxes that your employer pays to the state and federal governments, and under the right circumstances you are eligible to receive it. Go online to the Department of Workforce Services and click on “File New or Reopen Claims,” which will be highlighted and underlined.

Fill out the four sections to this application. Hit "Continue" to begin completing these four sections. Once you have completed each section, you will be unable to go back and make changes.

Begin by completing the personal information section.

Complete the employment information section, including your employment information for the last several months and separation information.

Complete the eligibility section, including information regarding your current availability for employment.

Complete the unemployment instructions, which give you information and instructions that will keep your unemployment claim active.

Wait at least two weeks before contacting anyone if you do not receive your unemployment check; sometimes it takes that long for processing. You can call 801-526-WORK (9675) with any questions regarding your claim.

Print any necessary numbers or information you will need in the future regarding your claim.
Remember, the first week that you are eligible for benefits is an unpaid waiting week.
If you remain on any online page for 20 minutes or more, your session will time out and you will need to restart this process.
