How to Use a Dark Mirror for Scrying
Whether you view it as a psychological tool for accessing your own associations and thoughts, or a magical means of accessing a higher spiritual power for supernatural purposes, scrying can be a powerful and useful tool. The key is to cultivate the right attitude. Go in receptive and open to whatever experience you might have. For many people, the simple process of learning to relax the mind can take quite a while to learn. For others, a few minutes of practice is adequate to receive intense visions.

1
Set up your space. You want a clear, uncluttered area that feels peaceful to you. Turn off anything that might buzz, beep, flash, or otherwise distract you. Get away from anything that has strong emotional associations unless it is directly connected to your purpose for scrying.
-
2
Formulate your purpose for scrying. Think of a sentence that simply explains the reason you are undertaking this particular attempt. Something as simple as "I am here to learn how to scry" is quite adequate for a first attempt.

-
3
Calm and center yourself. This can be as simple as taking several deep breaths, or as complex as you like. Don't feel like you have to do some complex ritual involving candles and daggers and such, unless it helps you to focus yourself on the task at hand.
-
4
With a relaxed gaze, stare at the dark mirror. You can sit on the ground with it in your hands, on a chair with it on a table in front of you, or however else you wish. Focus on the center of the mirror, blinking naturally when you need to.
-
5
Describe to yourself what you see. You might notice irregularities in the mirror, a cloudy appearance at the center of your gaze, colors or shapes. Notice what they are, while keeping your gaze soft.
-
6
If you start to see images, keep at it until you have accomplished your goal in scrying. For example, if you are trying to see into the future, you might see a sequence of events followed by the mirror going dark.
-
7
If you are just trying to learn to scry, keep going until you get tired of it. Five or ten minutes of concentration should be enough for a first try, but feel free to keep at it longer if you are enjoying the experience.
-
8
End your scrying ritual. For some people, this is as simple as standing up, stretching, and shaking out any stiffness. For others, it might involve closing a circle, dismissing guardian spirits, or whatever.

Tips & Warnings
Don't be chained to any superstitions, unless you like them. Staring blankly at something can be as productive for an atheist who believes she is only accessing her own subconscious as it can for a priest who thinks he is talking to spirits from another dimension. You don't need to assume any particular belief system in order for it to work.
Some people find it helpful to say what they are seeing out loud. It can deepen the light trance that scrying requires.
Don't start with something too important as a goal. If you set out to find the purpose of your life or the solution to some vexing dilemma the first time you scry, you are going to be too emotionally involved in it, and won't be able to get the proper, relaxed state. Your scrying session will most likely be frustrating and unproductive.
