How to Replace Basement Windows

Windows can provide much needed light to basements, which in turns lets you use the basement space better. Old, cracked or damaged basement windows, however, can actually keep the light from being able to come in. Luckily, there are window kits that you can purchase which will fit existing openings, with very little, if any adjustment to the openings. They come complete, including all mounting hardware. Read on to learn more about how to replace basement windows.

Things You'll Need

• Measuring tape
• Pen or pencil
• Paper
• Replacement window kit
• Putty knife
• Glazing beads
• Electric or hand screwdriver, or hammer (depending on if mounting hardware uses screws or nails)

Instructions

1. Remove an old window from the existing opening.

2. Either measure the existing opening and write down the measurements, or take the old window with you when you go to purchase the new window kit.

3. Purchase the new window kit, take it home, unpack it, and perform any pre-installation assembly that may be necessary, following the instructions included with the window kit. See Tips for more information.

4. Remove the existing window(s) from the opening(s), and prepare the opening(s) to receive the new window(s). Remove all old caulking and/or glazing material, make any repairs to the frame or surrounding structure that may be necessary, and make sure all surfaces are smooth, clean and dry. See Tips for more information.

5. From the inside of the room, put the new window into the existing opening. Check to see that all parts of the window are level and square; make any necessary adjustments.

6. Drill holes for the fastening hardware 6 inches from each corner of the part of the window frame that will hold the fastening, and 12 inches from the center part of the window frame that will hold the fastening.

7. Use the mounting hardware to attach and secure the replacement frame.

8. Apply glazing beads to each glazing bead slot, making sure all slots have been filled.

9. Repeat Steps 5 to 9 for each replacement window.

Tips & Warnings

• Assemble each kit before beginning any replacement installation. This way, you won’t have to stop and assemble a kit, then install the replacement window, then stop and assemble another kit, then install that one.

• Go ahead and remove all old windows, and repair and/or clean each opening before installing any replacement windows. The openings will then be ready to receive the replacement windows.

• Take care when removing old windows. Glass can break, which can cause severe injuries. Use proper eye and hand protection.

• Take care when drilling or nailing mounting hardware. Keep fingers, clothing, hair and other body parts clear while drilling or nailing.

• Stand on a regulation stepladder only, not on an overturned bucket, ordinary chair or anything else not intended to be used as a stepladder.
