Phonics should be taught to all children learning to read. This can range from preschool all the way to 2nd or 3rd grade. Phonics teaches children how to sound out words by getting them to understand the sounds of certain letter blends. These letters when used together make a sound that they don't make when they are used alone. Once children understand phonics they can read with ease and more fluidity.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Phonic curriculum
  • Phonics flashcards
  • Teacher/Tutor
  • Computer
  • Internet
  1. Step 1

Choose a program to follow. There are many curriculum programs that can take you through the concepts taught in phonics. You should choose one your feel comfortable with. Probably the most common and widely used phonics program is "Hooked on Phonics." It has a proven success record.

  2. Step 2

Make use of flash cards. Each day practice a few of your flash cards. Once you get the hang of them you can add more until you are doing them all with ease. You can buy flash cards, print some flash cards out online, or make your own with some index cards. Having your child help you make the flash cards will get them to learn the sounds without even realizing it.

  3. Step 3

Play phonics games. These games are fun for kids so they won't argue about learning. You can buy some phonics games to play at home or you can go to your computer, turn on the Internet, and head to Starfall. Starfall has online games which seem to attract and hold kid's attention. Plus it is perfect for all grades that are working on phonics. You complete 15 activities to move on to the next level. Each level builds on the level before it. It also uses fun characters that your child is sure to love.

  4. Step 4

Use audio CD's in conjunction with story books. Kids learn better when they can hear the sounds and not just look at the letters. Audio CD's can be extremely beneficial in the beginning stages of learning phonics. Wal-mart sells a system that is called Hooked on Phonics- Learn to Read Kindergarten System. It combines the use of the audio CD's, story books, flash cards and games.

  5. Step 5

Go over at least one storybook per day. Do this even if you get a lot of the words wrong. Just take your time and work on one book per day. Each book will be focused on one blend or sound. After you master it you can go on to another story book.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take your time, but make sure you do some phonics work each day. Skipping days is not recommended or you will begin to forget the sounds you already learned.
  • If you neglect learning phonics you will continue to have trouble reading throughout your life. It is that important.
