How to Do a Handstand Hop Like a B-Boy

The b-boy style of dancing is becoming more and more popular among young hip-hop fans. B-boy dancing looks like break-dancing but includes even more tricks than your average break-dancer uses. One common trick is a hopping handstand. This can be a difficult trick. But you can learn how to do a hopping handstand just like a b-boy.

Instructions

    • 1

Master a stationary handstand. Before you begin to attempt a hopping handstand, you should first be able to do a regular handstand. Practice finding your balance with a non-moving handstand before you try to hop in the position.

    • 2

Bend your elbows. Go into a handstand and bend your elbows. This will help to give you the push you need, as you get yourself off the floor and into a hopping motion.

    • 3

Use both hands. As you push up from the floor to create the hopping motion, it is important that you use both hands for an even hop. This will help you keep you balance, so practice pushing off of the floor evenly with both hands.

    • 4

Swing your legs. A common mistake people make when trying to do a hopping handstand like a b-boy is kicking their legs. In order to get the momentum to hop while in the handstand, you need to swing your legs back and forth instead of kicking them up and down.

    • 5

Hop backward. This is easier than going forward, because you don’t risk your legs coming over your head due to the momentum. Try pushing backward with your hands until you master the hopping handstand like a b-boy.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a spotter when you attempt to do a handstand hop. Until you have mastered the trick, it is safer if you have someone spotting you.
