Things You'll Need:
- Shovel
- Soil testing kit
- Lime (optional)
- Compost (optional)
- Scabiosa plant
- Water
- Pruning shears
- Fungicide
-
Step 1
Select the site for the scabiosa. It thrives in full sun only. It needs free-draining soil that tends to be dry, with a pH that is neutral to slightly alkaline. If the soil is very poor, add compost early in the spring, before planting.
-
Step 2
Test the soil before planting. Follow the directions of the soil testing kit. If the soil is acidic, add some lime. The amount of lime will depend upon the soil test results. Till in to mix thoroughly.
-
Step 3
Plant scabiosa in the fall or early spring. Dig a hole that is twice as big as the root ball. Carefully remove the plant from the container it came in and place it in the hole. Fill the hole with soil and tamp down gently to remove air bubbles. Water to settle the soil.
-
Step 4
Water the scabiosa regularly but do not over water. Wet ground will rot the roots. Do not over-feed, as it will produce more leaves and fewer blossoms. Watch for powdery mildew; at the first sign, spray with a fungicide.
-
Step 5
Divide scabiosa in the spring. It is a short lived perennial, remaining strong and beautiful for only about three years. Lift the mature plant, divide and replant to maintain scabiosa’s beautiful display.
