Scabiosa is essential for cottage gardens, rock gardens or mixed borders. Attractive to butterflies and bees, the stems of this flower grow from 12 to 36 inches tall with double daisy-like blossoms in pale colors from blue, pink, yellow or white. One plus about scabiosa is its long flowering season; it will blossom for as long as 6 months. This plant is suitable for USDA zones 3 to 9.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shovel
  • Soil testing kit
  • Lime (optional)
  • Compost (optional)
  • Scabiosa plant
  • Water
  • Pruning shears
  • Fungicide
  1. Step 1

Select the site for the scabiosa. It thrives in full sun only. It needs free-draining soil that tends to be dry, with a pH that is neutral to slightly alkaline. If the soil is very poor, add compost early in the spring, before planting.

  2. Step 2

Test the soil before planting. Follow the directions of the soil testing kit. If the soil is acidic, add some lime. The amount of lime will depend upon the soil test results. Till in to mix thoroughly.

  3. Step 3

Plant scabiosa in the fall or early spring. Dig a hole that is twice as big as the root ball. Carefully remove the plant from the container it came in and place it in the hole. Fill the hole with soil and tamp down gently to remove air bubbles. Water to settle the soil.

  4. Step 4

Water the scabiosa regularly but do not over water. Wet ground will rot the roots. Do not over-feed, as it will produce more leaves and fewer blossoms. Watch for powdery mildew; at the first sign, spray with a fungicide.

  5. Step 5

Divide scabiosa in the spring. It is a short lived perennial, remaining strong and beautiful for only about three years. Lift the mature plant, divide and replant to maintain scabiosa’s beautiful display.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cut sprays of scabiosa for beautiful flower arrangements. It can also be used in dried flower arrangments.
  • Check the guarantee and return policies of the nursery, gardening center, catalog or garden website you buy plants. Some have a one year guarantee and require that you have the receipt, shipping invoice or shipping label. Michigan Bulb guarantees their plants for life and will either replace the plants or refund your money as long as you are gardening.
