Tanning does not come naturally to everyone. Especially for those with fair skin, acquiring a deep tan can seem impossible. However, there are little secrets you can use to tan like the pros without looking orange, blotchy or ridiculous.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
There are many lotions to choose from to aid the quest for a deeper tan

Use lotion. Either in the tanning bed or in the sun, tanning lotions are one secret to a deep tan. There are many to choose from in the store with fun, exotic names like Parrot Bay and Golden Glaze. Buy a tester, which is available at tanning salons and beauty supply stores, to see if the lotion is a good fit for your body.

  2. Step 2

Use a tan extender. After using the tanning bed lotion, slather on a tan extender, available from companies such as Avon or Arbonne and beauty supply stores. These extenders keep your skin hydrated for the life of your tan and the deepness of the color lasts longer than normal.

  3. Step 3

Layer self tanner over SPF sunscreen while out in the sun. New research from scientists is showing that an ingredient in self tanner actually helps protect the skin and hydrates it. It can also help deepen color. Next time you hit the tanning bed or outdoors, add some self-tanner to your SPF lotion to deepen the color of your tan.

  4. Step 4

Use water. Spritz yourself with a spray bottle while tanning and drink lots of water while out in the sun tanning. Hydration has been known to deepen the color of a tan. Plus, good old H2O is just the best for you anyway and your body can always use water for healthy skin.

  5. Step 5

Layer your self-tanner. If you start out as medium skin and use self-tanner for a week, switch your self-tanner to the next level and try a tanner for tan or medium-dark skin tones. Many self-tanners are formulated to stretch across a spectrum and once you've hit the highest level, it is time to use a darker formula to deepen your tan.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always follow directions while using self-tanner so the result isn't orange-looking skin.
  • Know your limits. If you burn after 15 minutes in the sun don't overdo it. Gradually your skin will get darker instead of red if you take it easy.
