How to File for Unemployment in Austin, Texas
If you live in Austin, Texas, and you have recently lost your job, what do you do about filing for unemployment? If you were laid off (or in some cases fired), you have the right to file an unemployment claim. Keep in mind, however, that if you were fired for misconduct at work or quit for a work or medical reason, you might not be eligible. The steps below will help you through the initial unemployment application filing process.

Go online to http://www.twc.state.tx.us/ to begin the application filing process. Click on the icon that says Job Seekers and Employers. A new page will open.

Click on the line that reads Unemployment Insurance Benefits: Apply Online or by Phone. In this case, you will be applying online. You will end up on a page that will give you an explanation of benefits and how to apply. If you would like to apply by phone, call (512) 340-4300.

Hit the Start button at the bottom of the page to start your claim application.

Fill in the application forms. Create a 4-digit pin number during the application process, if you have not filed a claim within the last 12 months. The entire process will take about 15 minutes.

Hit Submit after you have completed the application process, and wait for a confirmation number. Your claim is not complete until you receive the confirmation number. If your claim is determined valid, your unemployment benefits will begin on the Sunday of the week you submit your application.

Register for work at a state of Texas employment service office in order to remain eligible for your unemployment benefits. The main local Austin office address is located at 101 E. 15th St, Suite 540. However, the process of filing for unemployment insurance must be started either on the telephone or online.

Tips & Warnings
If you forget your Personal Identification Number, you can call TWC Tele-Center at (512) 340-4300, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Wait at least two weeks before contacting anyone if you do not receive your unemployment check. Sometimes it takes that long for processing.
Don't step away from the online application once you start it. If you stay on an application page for more than 20 minutes, your work will be lost and you will have to start over again.
