How to Repair Pocket Doors

Pocket doors are beautiful and they add character to any home. This isn’t to say that they work properly all the time. If you have a set of pocket doors that are in need or repair and you would like to do the work yourself. Here a few typical problems and how to handle them.

  1. When Pocket Door is Off Track

    • 1

      Get a utility knife to break the pain seal along the stop moldings that are found on each door jamb.

      Carefully pry off the moldings with a chisel or a 5 in 1 tool and a flat bar.

      Position the door so that it is centered in the doorway.

    • 4

      Tilt it toward the room and lift the roller out of the overhead track.

    • 5

      Inspect the rollers to make sure that they are not broken, worn or otherwise in need of repair. If need be, replace one or both of the rollers.

      Slide your arm, if possible, into the pocket to make sure the track is screwed in place and is secure. If it feels loose do try to tighten the screws the best you can.

      If you have to replace the track you are going to need to remove enough of the wall covering by the track, so that you have access to the old track.

      Remove the track and install the new one. If you aren’t very experienced in the home carpentry department you should call a professional.

    Pocket Doors not Rolling Properly

      Check to make sure that the rollers are fitting in the track properly. If they are you will need to remove the door to figure out what is causing the problem.

      To remove the door, remove both stops from the head jamb and from one side jamb so that you can lift the door out.

      Angle the bottom out and then lift the door.

      Inspect the rollers, check to see if they are broken or loose. If the rollers are loose, tighten them. If they are broke you will need to replace them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pocket door tracks and rollers can also be adjusted to compensate for a warped door, but a badly warped door should be replaced.
