Finding out who is in a county jail is easier than you might think. Inmate information is a matter of public record and many counties have made it easy to see who is in custody through online searches.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The Shelby County Sheriff's office can be reached by phone by calling 901-545-5660. Ask for the jail and be prepared to provide a first and last name of the person you think might be in jail. If you have a middle name and date of birth that might also be helpful.

  2. Step 2

If you're searching using the Internet, go to the Shelby County Sheriff's office Web page at Shelby-sheriff.org.

  3. Step 3

Scroll down the page to the Jail heading and click on the "Who's In Jail" option.

  4. Step 4

You can either type in the name or check the entire list of names for jail inmates.
