How to Paint a Bird House

Paint a birdhouse to suit any mood. Do you want a Victorian bird house to match your home? Do you want a whimsical bird house that will make you laugh? Or do you want a muted bird house that will fade into the background and provide a wonderful home for a bird family?

Make a Home for a Family of Birds

1. Paint the bird house with the first coat of paint and allow to dry overnight. Then add another coat of paint if desired. Again, allow to dry overnight before hanging the bird house.

2. Add decorative trim to the birdhouse. You may wish to add shutters to make the birdhouse look like a Victorian home. You may wish to add decals of designs like a peace sign or a political campaign slogan.

3. Add contrasting colors to the bird house. Add a blast of energy to the bird house by adding more color.

4. Drill a hole to the front of the bird house and glue in a dowel for the birds to use as a perch at the front of the bird house. Give the birds a place to sit in front of their home.

Tips & Warnings

• Use outdoor paint that will stand up to the elements. Allow the bird house to dry well before hanging.
• Pick a paint color that brings you joy. You may want to make the bird house all one color or use different colors to make the house more colorful.
• You may want to add a name to the bird house. Or you could paint a motto on the house. Designs like hearts, flowers and scenes from nature are popular adornments on bird houses, too.
• Don't limit yourself to just one bird house; provide numerous shelters for birds in your yard.
