How to Wear a Karate Uniform
Karate, a way of fighting using the hands and feet without weapons, began on Okinawa Island in China, when an emperor determined Buddhist monks to be too weak. They were taught strength training exercises that became known as Karate. Student uniforms are white to symbolize a pure state of mind and to show the lowest rank in the sport. Perfecting the wearing of a Karate uniform is just as much an art as Karate itself.

Select the karate uniform or "gi" that matches the type of martial art you are studying. If your sensei has shown you which to buy, that’s easy. If you still need to select one, make sure you’re getting the right kind. Uniforms have evolved to accommodate the different kinds of moves you’ll be doing. For example, judo uniforms are a little tighter, allowing you to perform grappling and throwing techniques.

Slip into the karate uniform’s top. This should also be loose enough to let you move but tight enough to stay on your body. If you like, you can even wear a white t-shirt under the top.

Hold one end of the belt with one hand in the middle of your waist. Allow about a foot of slack. Wrap the other end of the belt around your waist twice. The first end is now secure by the loops you made with the belt. The long end should be in the front center of your waist. Pull the belt's long end over the other end. Wrap the long end under the belt against your body and through. Pull the long end over the short end of the belt, wrap the short end up and over the long end and pull the long end through the loop you just made with the short end. Pull this tight. Allow both loose ends to drape neatly downward.
