Ed Schieffelin was among the first prospectors in the Tombstone area. “The only stone you’ll find out there will be your tombstone,” skeptics told him. Of course, he proved them wrong, finding a stone made of silver. He named his first mine “The Tombstone” and the town that grew up around it eventually took its name. Though there were two major fires that destroyed much of the town in the 1880’s, Tombstone residents rebuilt and now it's a wonderful city to enjoy. Tour Tombstone, Arizona – known as “the town too tough to die.”

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stroll down Allen Street in downtown Tombstone. It’s like taking a trip back in time to the Old West, complete with vintage shops, restaurants, and cowboys dressed in period costume roaming the street.

  2. Step 2

Watch the recreation of the famous shoot-out at the O.K. Corral, which pitted Doc Holiday and the Earp’s against the Clanton’s and the McClaury’s.

  3. Step 3

Stop by the Tombstone Court House. It’s on this site, in the original courthouse building, that Wyatt Earp was tried for his role in the O.K. Corral shootout.

  4. Step 4

Take in a ghostly show at the Bird Cage Theater, which was also a gambling hall and brothel. It’s a museum now and reported to be one of the most haunted buildings in town.

  5. Step 5

Have a drink and a bite to eat at Big Nose Kate’s Saloon, which was once the site of the Grand Hotel, where the Clanton’s and the McLaury’s stayed the night before the famous shoot-out at the O.K. Corral. The Saloon is named for Doc Holiday’s girlfriend – a woman who is believed to have been the first prostitute in Tombstone.

  6. Step 6

Stop and smell the roses when you tour Tombstone, Arizona. Unlikely as it seems, the town is home to “the world’s largest rose bush.” Check it out at the Rose Tree Museum in downtown Tombstone.

  7. Step 7

Look for ghosts on the Tombstone Ghost Tour. This after-dark tour of the town includes all the details of ghost stories that have haunted Tombstone for years.

  8. Step 8

Pay your respects at Boothill Cemetery, where all of Tombstone’s earliest pioneers were buried. Though there are only 200 names displayed on tombstones, it’s believed there are as many as 300 people buried there.
