All studio photographers need to buy new photography backgrounds to keep their studio options fresh. This will give their regular customers variety. There are several options for buying photography backgrounds for an established portrait studio, or for the new photographer.Taking your time and exploring your variety of options will allow you to get the best quality and price on a photography backdrop.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  1. Step 1

Visit your local photography store. Browse in-stock photography backdrops at the store. Ask the sales associates if they can special order more varieties, colors, styles and sizes than what you can see on display. Ask if there are additional fees for special ordering the photography backdrop, or if you will need to pre-pay since it is not a regularly stocked item.

  2. Step 2

Browse the Internet for photography supply retailers. Click on the link for studio supplies. Choose the backdrops category. Browse the sizes, colors and styles available. Choose which ones will fit in your studio. Select colors and styles that you need, or that need replacing. Choose among muslins, canvases, sheers, flex-out and hand painted backdrops.

  3. Step 3

Buy photography magazines and look at the ads. Flip through photography trade magazines and take note of the ads for photography backgrounds in the back part of the magazine. Selling new and used photography equipment in trade magazines is common. Call or email the retailers in the ads for more information about the backdrops for sale.

  4. Step 4

Shop at your local fabric store. Browse the muslin fabric section, usually located in the quilting supplies. Browse the sheer fabrics for variety. Ask the sales associate to cut the fabrics to the desired length you need for your photography. For a finished look, hem the rough edges.

  5. Step 5

Look for certain features before you buy. Using a photography backdrop on a portable background stand kit will require a background with a pocket for the crossbar.

  6. Step 6

Ask about return policies for all photography backdrops. Examine all backdrops once you get them home. Quality can differ greatly among manufacturers. Fraying, unfinished edges and thin spots in the fabric are signs of poor quality backdrops. Ask for a refund if you are dissatisfied with your photography background purchase.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once you find a photography backdrop vendor that supplies quality backdrops, use that vendor for future purchases.
  • There are many vendors that will sell poor quality backdrops to buyers that purchase sight unseen.
