Diarrhea refers to frequent intestinal evacuations of loose and watery stools. It is part of the body's defense mechanism in getting rid of toxins or poisons out of the body. This medical condition is usually manifested with stomach pain and gas. It may signify an existing problem around the gastrointestinal tract or can be an indication of an underlying disease such as irritable bowel syndrome, dysentery, or ulcerative colitis. Occurrence of diarrhea can be stopped through taking over-the-counter medications, but it may also interfere with the body's natural way of draining the toxins out. With natural remedies, the discomforting effects of diarrhea can be reduced without halting the immune system's normal defense.
Things You'll Need
- Clean drinking water
- Soup or broth
- Banana, rice, applesauce, and tea or toast
- Heating pad
- Lemons, ginger, and powdered pepper
- Apple cider vinegar
- Activated charcoal
- Blackberry, raspberry, and green tea
Drink lots of clear sterilized water to replenish loss fluids, prevent dehydration and to provide ample amounts of electrolytes needed by the body. Stay away from caffeinated and alcoholic drinks.
Avoid eating solid foods and go for a BRAT diet. It is not advisable to eat solid foods while diarrhea is taking its course. Your digestive tract is already preoccupied in dealing with pathogenic organisms, making it incapable of properly digesting solid foods. So give your digestive system a rest by consuming soups or broth for the time being. Then later you can start the BRAT diet--consisting of bananas, rice, applesauce and tea (or toast).
Apply heat therapy to reduce abdominal or stomach cramps. Diarrhea is typically paired with stomach pain. To reduce such discomfort, get a heating pad, wrap it with a towel and place it at the lower back area. Avoid placing it directly on top of the stomach or abdomen as it may induce vomiting.
Try the lemon juice therapy. Freshly squeezed lemon juice taken 3 to 5 times a day will help eliminate diarrhea-causing pathogens. Taking 1 to 2 tablespoons of lemon juice before meals is also excellent in protecting the stomach against viruses that cause diarrhea. You can also mix ½ teaspoon of lemon juice, ½ teaspoon of ginger juice and ¼ teaspoon of powdered pepper. Drink this mixture 2 times a day to make stools less watery and relieve diarrhea.
Treat diarrhea by using activated charcoal. Activated charcoal is known for expelling intestinal gas and absorbing toxins that cause diarrhea. You can take it in the form of tablets or capsules, mix the powder with water, or sprinkle it on food. Safe dosage for adults with diarrhea and gas is up to 5 grams a day.
Use apple cider vinegar to fight pathogens. Mix 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and take it before every meal. Apple cider vinegar is excellent in eliminating unwanted toxins within the intestines and the whole digestive tract. It also contains pectin that's beneficial in battling certain types of bacteria that causes diarrhea. Pectin also adds mass to the stools making it less watery.
Sip some hot tea to get rid of diarrhea. Drinking hot blackberry, raspberry, or green tea 3 times a day is a very helpful way in alleviating diarrhea. Ginger tea is also beneficial in relieving stomach pain or abdominal cramps that goes with diarrhea.
Cure diarrhea by consuming carrots. Prepare 2 to 3 pieces of carrots, slice them and then steam until its soft enough to blend into a soup. This cure is excellent in eliminating E.coli bacteria among individuals with severe diarrhea.

- Contact your doctor if the following are present:
- If diarrhea persists longer than a week or keeps on recurring.
- If diarrhea is accompanied with high fever, severe vomiting, and blood or pus on stools.
- If signs of dehydration sets in such as dry skin, lips or mouth, and failure to urinate within 8 hours.
