When it comes to having a house full of kids, learning to let go of material items once treasured seems inevitable. That doesn't mean the décor has to suffer. What does it mean? You may have to choose furniture that not only looks good, but holds up to the unconventional uses that can only be formulated in a child's mind.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rambunctious kids
  • Desire to decorate
  • Some funds
  1. Step 1

Consider reaching deeper into your pockets- or not.
Finding quality furniture, built to last often means having to pay a higher price. Instead, try consignment shops, furniture outlets, or warehouses that sell floor models, estate purchases and other used furniture. These are prime places for solid wood pieces such as tables, wardrobes, chests, and dressers. For upholstered pieces, you may want to go new.

  2. Step 2

    Take your time.
Hunt for pieces that will last. Think of all the possible accidents, spills, and acrobatic tumbles the items may be subjected to and decide if they can withstand the tests.

  3. Step 3

    Sitting pretty.
Just because durability is at the top of your list doesn't mean looks must fall to the bottom. There are options in fabric like microsuede and microfiber as well as fabric protectors which allow you to purchase appealing patterns and vibrant colors. Go for a red hot cotton sofa with oversized pillows, just remember to have the stain guard applied before it is set up for delivery. It's worth the extra cost.

  4. Step 4

    Upkeep.
Microsuede and Microfiber furniture requires a soft cloth or brush for cleaning and smoothing. See the instructions that come with your furniture for upkeep.
With Fabric Protection Plans, you may receive a cleaning kit for everyday soils. There is a number to call for those problems that need a professional touch. There may be a limit to the number of house-calls the professional will make so check your plan.

  5. Step 5

    Let them play not pummel.
Although you can purchase furniture designed to withstand some wear, stop the children from intentionally demolishing your home. Steer them in another direction or encourage them to engage in recreation other than indoor contact sports.

Tips & Warnings
  • The key is to decorate your home in a manner that showcases your personality and taste for years to come or until you decide to re-decorate. Make it by choice and not due to the necessity of having to replace broken-down furniture you once loved.
