I might as well tell you right now, cats shed. And indoor cats shed all of the time. This is because we leave our lights on at night and the cats system is tricked into thinking that the seasons are always changing. But there are a few things that you can do to cut down on the shedding and make things a little more bearable for you.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A proper diet for your kitty
  • Vitamins
  • A good brush or comb
  • Deshedding tool
  • Cat treats
  • A little of your time
  1. Step 1

The first thing that you should do is to make sure your cat has a healthy diet. When it comes to having a healthy pet you never want to skip on pet food. Feeding your pet a cheap brand of pet food can cause a lot more serious health issues than just shedding.

  2. Step 2

There are also vitamins derived from fish oils that can help by providing omega 3 fatty acids that work to strengthen the coat. You can find them at most pet stores or can even purchase them from your local vet.

  3. Step 3

Daily brushing is a must, it really doesn't take all that much time out of your day and most cats find brushing to be very enjoyable. But knowing a cats personality they may object to it even if they really enjoy it! I like to keep some cat treats close by and give them one or two through out the brushing. This usually keeps bad behavior to a minimum.

  4. Step 4

De-shedding tool: If you can afford it (22.00 on amazon) the FURminator deshedding tool is wonderful for removing extra hair. It works by removing the loose dead undercoat and you will be amazed at the difference this makes.

  5. Step 5

After brushing try wiping kitty down with a pet cleaning wipe. This works great to remove any left over loose hair.
You can find the pet wipes at wal-mart or any pet supply store.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be very gentle while brushing and kitty may grow to love grooming time, once he or she discovers just how good it feels.

on 8/27/2008 I love the Furminator. It really works. It is best to use it outside if possible because hair goes everywhere. THanks for the other tips!

I just wanted to add that sometimes people with allergies can be around a cat if they give it a weekly bath.
