Things You'll Need:
- Preperation time
- relaxation skills practice
-
Step 1
Your application and resume have been reviewed and a company you would like to work for has requested an interview. You are excited and nervous. You know it is important to present well. Start with preparation.
-
Step 2
Obtain information on the company (internet, etc). Identify their mission statement, company outlook, how long they have been in business, success rate, location or location (s).
-
Step 3
Identify what impresses you the most and write it down.
-
Step 4
Obtain information on the position. Go online to see the requirements and duties. Identify all your strengths regarding the position. Write down why this job is a match to you.
-
Step 5
Prepare what you will wear. Clothing must be clean, neat and business like. It does not matter where you work. It is important to present with idea that you mean business and are confident.
-
Step 6
Next, know why you are seeking this job. Are looking for a career change? Career growth? Personal growth? Extra income? etc.
-
Step 7
Practice interviewing with a friend or to yourself. Ask and answer potential questions that you think you will be asked in the interview. Practice until you answer in a calm and precise manner.
-
Step 8
On your way to the interview, practice your responses. Do self talk about why you would be a great asset to the company. Take deep breaths if anxiety begins to build.
-
Step 9
During interview, make sure you sit up straight, try to keep hands in front of you (in your lap, etc), do not fidget, give eye contact, address interviewer by name often.
All will give impression that you are confident. -
Step 10
Try not to:
Say um
engage in nervous habits (nail biting, hair twirling)
answer with more information than needed or answer a question that was not asked. -
Step 11
Remember the interviewer is a person too- ask a polite question (how long have you worked here? what do you like best about this company? Is that a picture of your family on the desk?) When you ask interviewer questions, it shows you have the ability to relate to others and that you are observant or insightful. It helps the interviewer relax as well.
-
Step 12
Remember all your strengths. You landed an interview, right? You are half way there. You have won half the battle. Use this to keep your confidence.
-
Step 13
End the interview with a statement of gratitude for time and consideration. You can send a card to say thank you, as well.
