Things You'll Need:
- Hydrogen Peroxide
- Baking Soda
- Dish Detergent
- TOMATO JUICE
-
Step 1
TRY NOT TO LET YOU PET GET INTO THE HOUSE AFTER BEING SPRAYED! ! !
They will roll & rub all over everything making this job 100 time worse -
Step 2
mixture #1
GOOD OLD TOMOTO JUICE
With the pet safely secured OUT SIDE THE HOUSE ,run to the store & buy 5 or 6 BIG cans of Tomato Juice.
Get on some old clothes
Get the hose running , Now cover your pet with the tomato juice. Let it sit on them for about 5 minutes & rinse with the hose
Repeat as needed
This seems to work good , not 100% , but it is better than nothing -
Step 3
Mixture #2
1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda
2 tbsp Dish Detergent.
Double the amounts if you have a large dog
Mix it in a large plastic bucket, because it will foam up big time. You are making an oxygen generator. Wash the dog/cat with this while it is still foaming, it is the oxygen which reacts with the thiols ( the smelly oil in skunk spray) to neutralize the odor. If you wait & it stops foaming it will not work. So mix it & wash you pet right away
Don't try to store it in an airtight container, because it will blow up. The brew also works for clothes, humans , furniture & in carpets. -
Step 4
You are going to be busy for a while. But you have no choice but to get it cleaned up right away or live with that smell for a month or more. It will go away eventually , but why live with the smell when with a few $$$ & a little work you can get rid of the smell

on 3/9/2009 I need a solution I can use in cold weather. I live in Upstate NY and it's too cold to bathe my dogs outside and can't afford (nor do I want skunk smell in my car) to cart them off to a vet for a bath. Any ideas?

on 9/12/2008 A few things that should have been mentioned. Avoid the dogs face if you are using mixture #2. It can also bleach your pets fur. I have heard from MANY people that the tomato juice does not work. It only makes a HUGE mess. Also, it only masks the odor. If you read the Febreze bottle, it will tell you not to spray the product directly on your pets.
In the past, I have used a product called BioWorld Odor Neutralizer, BON-CC-41, when my dog was skunked and it worked really well. It is completely safe to use anywhere on the dog. They said it is even safer than shampoo!
