How to Restore XP to Factory Settings

Windows XP comes with a system-restore facility that enables the restoration of the system to any chosen point. This is particularly handy in case of a virus attack that cannot be fixed by anti-virus programs. Follow these basic tips to restore XP to the factory settings.

Instructions

    • 1

Save and close all programs that are being currently used.

    • 2

Point to Start and then Accessories, then click on System Tools.

    • 3

From the proffered menu, select "Restore My Computer to an Earlier Time." Then click "Next."

    • 4

From the following menu, a calendar, select the time to which you want to restore your system. Then click "Next."

    • 5

Confirm the restore point (in red), ensure all programs are closed and click "Next." This will begin the restoration process.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you back up all programs.

  • Only system files are restored. If a file is saved, it will not change.

  • The process is completely reversible.

  • Don't forget to read all the instructions during the System Restore process.

That's nice and all ... but not what the heading says. It says 'factory settings' not 'earlier restore point'. Not very helpful.

Ok but what if our current version is more updated due to service pack installations and with the disk in it won't let you start over because of this? It will not give you the option to reinstall, and add/remove program will not allow you to delete the service pack. HELP!!
