How to Sign Up for Unemployment in Illinois

Signing up for unemployment in Illinois has been made easier because of the online application process. Anyone can use the Internet unemployment site to file an unemployment claim. The nice thing about filing a claim online is that there are no more long lines to stand in and you can take your time answering the questions. There is also an option to have your weekly checks deposited right into your checking account.

      File online if you have Internet 6.0 or newer and Adobe Reader. File the claim by starting the process during the week you are not working or only working a partial week. Read the entire page and then click Continue.

      Click on Register at the bottom of the page. You will need to enter your first, middle and last name. You will need to enter your name as it appears on your social security card. Then enter your date of birth and your social security number. Next, enter your driver's license number or the identification card number. Then, select the state you live in and click Continue.

      Set up a username and password to use with the online system. Then click Continue. The next page will ask about your marital status and if you are claiming any dependents. If you are claiming any dependents, you must provide their names and social security numbers.

      Click Continue and enter your employment history. This information requires that most recent employers name, address and dates employed. You need to enter any employers back 18 months. After you enter all the information, click Continue.

      Enter any income you made for the week you are claiming. This is important for starting the claim. There is also a section for any pensions or social security benefits you may receive during this period. Continue answering the questions until you reach the end of the application process. Then click File a Claim.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to file in the week that you are filing the claim for.

  • Do not give any false information.

  • If you are an illegal alien, you will need to provide your green card number.
