Check the weather. Choose a warm day, but not so warm that it is miserable to work outside. Also if you have a big house you may want to have a helper to minimize time. Put on protective gear. Wear gloves, a mask and safety glasses at all times. If any shingles are lifted, you do not want to breathe in or get any asbestos on you.

Mix the solution. Use a mild soap plus water to make a good cleaning solution in your bucket. Securely set the ladder up. Get help if you do not feel safe climbing and washing on a ladder alone. Wash the shingles. Scrubbing with a soft bristle brush will not disturb asbestos in shingles. You must wash all the shingles with the soap and water solution. This will give you a nice, clean canvas to paint on.
