If you are planning a luau for adults or kids, you have to have leis. Plan and make them up before your party or set the supplies out for a fun and easy activity for your guests of all ages. Hang or drape them for decorations or, of course, wear them and give them out as party favors. Who knows, you might get carried away and make one for everyone on your block. The finished product looks so real, even the most novice creator will feel crafty.
Cut the crepe paper in 3 inch strips with the paper still folded. This will make cutting faster and straighter than if it was unfolded.

Unfold the crepe paper and pull apart the layers of strips.

Cut a piece of crochet thread three feet long. Thread the tapestry needle.

Sew a wide running stitch down the center of a strip of crepe paper. Make sure the crochet thread is directly in the middle of the strip to give you 1 1/2 inch petals on each side of the lei. The running stitches need to be 3 inches long so that when they are gathered, they will fold to 1 1/2 inch petals. After you make one, you will be able to judge just by looking at it how far apart to make your stitches.

Repeat the running stitch down the center of seven more strips for a total of eight strips. Add more if the lei is not full enough.

Tie the ends of the crochet thread together. Add a dot of glue to the knot to prevent the lei from coming undone.

Twist the gathered crepe paper lei around the crochet thread, one way and the other, fluffing and crinkling lightly to make it look like lush, full Hawaiian flowers.
Tips & Warnings
Make individual flowers by threading half a strip on doubled crochet thread. Pull snug and knot both ends. Fluff and crinkle like the lei.
Although it's texture is slightly different, you can use bright colored tissue paper for your leis.
A basic household string will work if crochet thread is not available.
These leis would also make terrific ropes of garland. Make several of them the same length as the leis and tie them end to end. Drape them on walls, from ceilings or even to decorate a Christmas tree.
