Barb wire fences are a common sight in the countryside. Their benefits are many, but ease of construction is one item that tops the list. Barb wire is also cheaper than constructing a woven wire fence and accomplishes the same function: keeping animals in or keeping them out.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rolls of barb wire
  • Heavy leather gloves
  • Wire pliers
  • T-Posts or Wooden posts
  • Fence clips or staples
  • Post hole digger or T-Post Driver
  • Hammer
  1. Step 1

Measure the area that you want to fence. Plan on purchasing four times the amount of barb wire that you have measured. Add an extra fifty to a hundred feet to the total.

  2. Step 2

Plan on setting a post every ten to fifteen feet around the area. You can use metal t-posts or wooden posts. Either works well.

  3. Step 3

Start the barb wire fence approximately six inches above ground level. Wrap the wire around the first post and wind the end around the remaining wire. Wearing gloves, pull the wire tightly to the last post. With the wire pliers cut the wire and twist the end tightly around the strung wire.

  4. Step 4

Attach the wire to the t-posts with fence clips, using the pliers to affix them securely. If using wooden posts, hammer fence staples across the wire into the post.

  5. Step 5

Repeat the above steps every 12 to 18 inches apart up the posts. You should have at least four strands of barb wire for a secure fence.

  6. Step 6

Store any remaining wire in a safe place well away from children. The extra wire can be used for repairs should the need arise.

Tips & Warnings
  • Barb wire fences are the cheapest and easiest type of fence to build.
  • By starting low to the ground with barb wire, you can discourage small animals from crossing onto your property.
  • Always wear thick leather gloves with long cuffs when working with barb wire. The barbs can easily rip your skin and cause infection or other damage.
