Things You'll Need:
- Financial statements
- Case worker
-
Step 1
Contact your local Human or Social Services offices. In order to receive welfare benefits, you’ll need to call someone who works for your local Social Services department. This department handles all public assistance needs.
-
Step 2
Speak with a representative and see whether you qualify. Unfortunately, not everyone qualifies for welfare. You have to be at least 21 years old to receive benefits. If you are under 21, you must be homeless, disabled or have a child to receive benefits.
-
Step 3
Present your financial information. Before a case worker can approve your request, they’ll need to review your finances. You’ll be asked to provide bank statements, paycheck stubs, tax returns, divorce certificates and social security card.
-
Step 4
Learn about different welfare programs. The Department of Social Services features various programs. Depending on your situation, the case worker chooses the best program and decides monthly benefits. If you’re unable to work, you’ll likely qualify for full benefits, which include housing assistance, food stamps and free medical insurance.
-
Step 5
Agree to work towards employment. If you’re relatively healthy and able to work, the Department of Social Services may grant temporary benefits. However, you must agree to actively look for employment. A case worker will regularly check your progress.
