It is believed that firecrackers first originated in China, but today they are used worldwide. Celebrations such as America's Independence Day, the Chinese New Year, the Diwali in India, and numerous others ensure that firecrackers stay in mass supply. Firecrackers, however, can sometimes be expensive, or even worse, difficult to get ahold of in your area. If looking to save some money, or not to have to drive miles for firecrackers, it is possible to make your own firecrackers for around a dollar or less.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Roll of duct tape
  • Piece of paper
  • Plastic toy gun caps (usually red)
  • Scissors
  • Firecracker fuse
  • 1 pin (thumbtack can work)
  1. Step 1

Take two strips of toy gun caps and place them on the piece of paper. Each strip should have around 15 or more caps on it. Make sure the back of the caps are facing upward so you can stab through the back.

  2. Step 2

Use the pin to poke a hole into the back of each cap, therefore pushing the powder inside of the cap onto the paper. Do this with both strips of caps. Once complete, use the pin to scrape out the rest of the powder from each cap. Use caution when pressing through the back of the caps. There is a small chance they could pop.

  3. Step 3

Cut off a 2-inch wide strip of paper from the bottom of the piece of paper. The length of this strip should be the width of the bottom of the paper (8.5 inches). Fold the strip in half lengthwise.

  4. Step 4

Pour the powder that was extracted from the two cap strips into the V created by folding the paper. Fold a crease into one end of the strip to ensure the powder does not fall out.

  5. Step 5

Cut off a piece of fuse about 2 inches long. About one inch will go into the firecracker, and the other will hang out of the firecracker to light. Shake all of the powder into the creased end of the strip of paper.

  6. Step 6

Insert the fuse into the end of the strip that has all of the powder in it.

  7. Step 7

Roll the strip of paper up with the powder and half the fuse inside. The other half of the fuse should be hanging out. Be gentle while rolling up the paper for safety purposes.

  8. Step 8

Pull off about 6 inches of duct tape and rip it in half lengthwise. Use one piece to firmly wrap up the firecracker. The tape should be tight on the firecracker, but once again, be gentle while wrapping.

  9. Step 9

Light the fuse, put some distance between you and the firecracker, and enjoy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Save the other long strip of duct tape to make the next firecracker.
  • Back away from the firecracker after lighting it.
  • If under the age of 18, parental guidance is suggested.
