How to Get the Day Off for Yom Kippur

An important part of observing Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is taking the day off work. Although some companies close for the Jewish holy days, most do not.

    Preparation

  1. Step 1

    When you start a new job, ask about the company policy regarding taking time off for the Jewish holidays.

  2. Getting the Day Off

    Ask your human resources department about the company's policy regarding taking time off work for religious holidays.

  4. Step 2

    Plan ahead for any time-sensitive projects or events that will need to be done on the day you are out. Ask a co-worker to cover for you on anything that cannot be postponed to a different day, promising to do the same the next time he or she needs a day off.

  5. Step 3

    Wait for a quiet moment and ask your supervisor if he or she has a few minutes.

  6. Step 4

    Explain that Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement and that part of observing this important Jewish holiday is to stay home from work. Tell your supervisor that you have already made arrangements for a co-worker to cover for you.
