As a recent college graduate just starting her teaching career, one might guess that I am very tight on spending money at the moment. After college I checked my closet and all I owned were fraternity and sorority t-shirts and pajama pants. Sound familiar? This may not the look your boss might expect from the new Junior Copywriter. Here are a few tips on looking sharp on a budget.

How to Dress for A New Job on A BUDGET

  1. Step 1

Make a plan. Check your closet. Do you have a nice pair of slacks? A professional black pump? If not, don't worry. We will get there! First, throw out any clothes that you do not wear or plan to wear again. All of my sorority and fraternity shirts were sent off and I had a local seamstress make a blanket for me. I love memories, but do not need the clutter!

  2. Step 2

Mix and Match. Think about separate pieces. These items are a must:
    Black Pants
    Black Pencil Skirt
    Black Pumps/High Heels
    Black Flats
    Black Cardigan/Sweater
Nice Pair of Jeans (for Casual Friday)

If you keep your look simple first starting out- you will save money.

  3. Step 3

Now, time to do some research. Find out when TAX FREE WEEKEND is in your state. This may save you a lot of money. Check online to some local stores like Macy's, Kohl's, and JCPenny. There sale dates are online. I just went to Kohls today and for $75 I got 8 pieces! Once you have the staple items, find nice solid t-shirts to match. Green, Red, White, and Blue are good to start off with. You can mix and match now. One week wear the pants with the red top and sweater, next week wear the pencil skirt, red top and flats!

People really don't remember your clothing unless you remind them. Do not say, "Yah, I wore this last week, but it is all I have."

By a few pieces of nice costume jewelry to add. Earrings will change the look drastically, I promise!

  4. Step 4

These are my biggest tips- Always check the sale racks AND if a piece is broken, YET FIXABLE, ask for a discount! I bought a $25 sweater for $8 today just because the zipper was stuck!

    HAPPY HUNTING! :)
