How to Reinforce an Axe Handle

It takes a while to get the hang of swinging an axe, which unfortunately means that many axe swings result in misses. Sometimes, if an axe handler accidentally overshoots the intended target, the thin neck of the handle will bash into the object and cause the handle to crack or break. If you're prone to such mistakes, it may be worth your while to cushion and reinforce your axe handle; here's how to do it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the flexible rubber hose around the neck of the axe handle, starting just about an inch below the blade. Wrap it in a continuous, compressed coil. It should give you several inches of coverage down the handle of the axe.

    • 2

When the entire length of hose has been wrapped around the handle, tuck the ends underneath the coil so that they stay in place by themselves.

    • 3

Starting at the end of the handle near the blade, wrap the rubber hose with electrical tape.

    • 4

Completely seal off the rubber hose with electrical tape as you work your way down the axe handle. When you're finished, you will have a durable, weather-proof cushion that will protect your axe handle when you miss your intended target.

Tips & Warnings

  • Other types of soft or rubbery material can be substituted for the rubber hose. Take a look around your garage or basement for scrap material that might work just as well.
